Load Shedding Looms as Cold Snap Strains Gauteng's Power Grid
Johannesburg, South Africa – Gauteng residents are facing increased pressure on the electricity grid as a severe cold front grips the province. City Power is urgently appealing to residents to conserve electricity amidst spiking demand driven by widespread use of heaters, electric blankets, and geysers.
City Power Plea: Use Electricity Wisely
The utility warns that the surge in demand is placing immense strain on its infrastructure. This follows the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing an orange alert Level 6 for disruptive snowfall, particularly in high-lying areas, coupled with sub-zero temperatures across much of Gauteng.
Eskom's Response and Grid Status
Meanwhile, Eskom reports that while the system is currently stable, it remains constrained. Emergency reserves are being strategically deployed. The power utility aims to bring 2,550 megawatts of generation capacity back online before this evening's peak demand to further stabilize the grid. Furthermore, Medupi Unit 4, contributing 800 megawatts, is nearing completion of its repairs following damage in 2021 and is expected to be operational next month.
City Power implores customers to proactively manage their electricity consumption:
- Switch off geysers during peak hours (early mornings and evenings).
- Utilize hot water bottles and extra blankets for warmth.
- Avoid unnecessary electricity usage.
Response teams are on high alert, but preventative measures are crucial to avert potential power cuts. Residents are also reminded to use heating devices responsibly to avoid fire hazards. The cold snap is expected to persist throughout the week, exacerbating the existing challenges on the fragile power network. Let's work together to ease the pressure on our grid!
