Johannesburg - Shock and amazement rippled through the North West province today as a lion made a dramatic escape from a moving wildlife transporter. The incident, captured on video, shows the adult male lion perched precariously on the roof of the truck before leaping to the ground near Lichtenburg and Zeerust.
Motorists were stunned as they witnessed the incredible sight. The video, shared widely on social media by Izak du Plessis from Nuuspod, quickly went viral. One video shows the lion standing atop the moving truck, while another, narrated by a woman, captures the animal walking calmly alongside a fence after its daring jump.
Thankfully, the lion appeared unharmed by its impromptu exit. The driver of the transporter reportedly pulled over immediately after the incident. The location of the escape was near Bakerville, close to Lichtenburg.
Caxton Network News attempted to contact the alleged owner of the lion, but he remained tight-lipped, neither confirming nor denying the incident. He suggested the video could be fake and advised contacting those who filmed the escape for more information. He did, however, assure that his lion was safely back in its cage on his farm.
While Du Plessis's post suggested the lion had been purchased at an auction in Nylstroom, this information remains unconfirmed. However, several commenters on the social media posts claimed the lion had been safely darted and returned to its owner.
The incident raises questions about the safety and security of transporting wild animals. Authorities are likely to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape.
