Pirates' CAF CL Exit: Tactical Tweaks & Squad Rotation Explained!

Orlando Pirates suffered a heartbreaking exit from the CAF Champions League after winning 3-0 against St Eloi Lupopo but losing in the penalty shootout. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has shed light on the tactical decisions behind key omissions from the squad for that crucial second leg tie.

Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa were notable absentees, raising eyebrows amongst supporters. Ouaddou explained that these were not due to injury or disciplinary issues, but rather strategic choices related to the opponent's playing style and the need for squad rotation.

"Regarding the profile of the opponent and game, we knew this team will come and adapt with a very low block, so we wanted to try this false nine, someone who is able to keep the ball up front in small spaces and at the same time to push the defence to be dragged out of position," Ouaddou stated.

He further emphasized the importance of keeping the squad fresh, particularly with the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final against Magesi looming. Magesi, the reigning champions, had previously eliminated Pirates from the competition, adding extra significance to the upcoming clash.

"So it was a tactical choice [to not have Makgopa] and at the same time, we’re playing many competitions, as you said, in terms of rotation, in a few days we need a competitive team as well."

Pirates are set to host Magesi at Orlando Stadium. The game is scheduled to kick off at 19h00. The coach will be hoping that his tactical decisions pay off this time, allowing the Buccaneers to progress in the Carling Knockout Cup.

Looking Ahead: Carling Knockout Cup

The focus now shifts to the Carling Knockout Cup, where Pirates will be looking to avenge their previous defeat against Magesi. The Orlando Stadium will be buzzing with anticipation as the Buccaneers aim to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
