President Cyril Ramaphosa is gearing up for a significant international engagement, as he prepares to attend the G7 Summit in Canada. This comes as South Africa is actively preparing to host the G20 Summit in Johannesburg later this year.

Speaking to reporters in Pretoria, Ramaphosa confirmed his upcoming trip and highlighted the opportunity it presents to engage with key global leaders, including US President Donald Trump. While South Africa isn't a member of the G7, its presence at the meeting underscores its growing influence on the world stage.

G7 as a Preparation for G20

Ramaphosa emphasized the strategic importance of the G7 visit, positioning it as crucial preparation for the G20 Summit scheduled for November. He stated that the G7 summit will provide a valuable platform to interact with various heads of state and advance South Africa's agenda.

"We will be able to interact meaningfully with them," Ramaphosa said. "I am going to have a bilateral with the Chancellor of Germany, the Prime Minister of Canada and President Trump, whom we met at the White House. The G7 gives an opportunity to go and propagate our message. The message about South Africa’s G20 presidency."

Key Objectives for the G7 Meeting

The President outlined key objectives for his participation in the G7 meeting:

  • Strengthening bilateral relations with G7 member states.
  • Promoting South Africa's priorities for the upcoming G20 summit.
  • Advocating for inclusive global growth and development.

Ramaphosa reiterated that the G7 meeting serves as a vital stepping stone towards a successful G20 summit hosted by South Africa. "We are going to use it as a platform to begin to consolidate what we want to have in November when the leaders’ summit takes place here," he concluded. The G7 summit provides a unique opportunity to lay the groundwork for productive discussions and collaborations at the G20 level.
