EMPD Chief Implicates Deputy in Appointment Irregularities
Pretoria - The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard explosive testimony regarding alleged irregular appointments within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD). EMPD Chief of Police, Jabulani Mapiyeye, took the stand to detail a series of appointments he claims bypassed proper procedures and lacked formal written approval.
At the centre of these allegations is Deputy Chief Officer Julius Mkhwanazi. Mapiyeye testified that Mkhwanazi allegedly orchestrated these appointments, raising serious concerns about governance and transparency within the EMPD.
The commission is also investigating a separate matter involving a working relationship between the EMPD and companies belonging to Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, who is facing criminal charges. Isaac Mapiyeye, the suspended head of the EMPD, has accused Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi of colluding with Matlala by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with two of Matlala's companies.
Dodgy Deals and Criminal Accusations
The details emerging from the Madlanga Commission paint a concerning picture of potential corruption and abuse of power within the EMPD. The testimony suggests that Matlala, despite facing criminal accusations related to tender irregularities, managed to forge a working relationship with the EMPD. This raises questions about the vetting processes and oversight mechanisms in place to prevent such arrangements.
The commission's investigation is ongoing, and further revelations are expected as more witnesses are called to testify. The outcome of the inquiry could have significant implications for the leadership and operations of the EMPD.
