Sundowns' CAF Clash: Al Hilal's Unbelievable Journey! You Won't Believe It!

Sundowns Face Unique Challenge Profiling Al Hilal

Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for a CAF Champions League group stage clash against Al Hilal of Sudan. However, this isn't your typical opponent. Due to the ongoing civil war in Sudan, Al Hilal hasn't played a league game in their home country for two years. This presents a unique challenge for Sundowns in profiling their opponent.

Following the CAF Champions League group stage draw, Sundowns landed in Group C alongside Al Hilal, MC Alger, and Saint Eloi Lupopo. Normally, Al Hilal, based in Omdurman, would be considered a tough opponent. But their strength might be compromised due to the lack of domestic league play.

Al Hilal's Extraordinary Circumstances

Since 2023, Al Hilal has been playing league matches as guests in other countries. Last season, they even topped the Mauritania Ligue 1 table but weren't allowed to be crowned champions. To qualify for the CAF Champions League, the Sudan Football Association (SFA) created an "elite league" with eight clubs, where the top two qualified for the continental stage.

Al Hilal has been preparing for the CAF Champions League through friendly matches in Rwanda. They also had a bye in the first preliminary round and then beat Police FC of Kenya 4-1 on aggregate.

Home Away From Home: Amahoro Stadium

Al Hilal has confirmed that their opening CAF Champions League group stage match against MC Alger will be played at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda. This decision was made after considering the best possible environment for their continental fixtures. Club officials hope this move will ensure optimal playing conditions and strong fan support as they aim for CAF Champions League success.

Sundowns, known for their meticulous opposition analysis, may find it difficult to accurately assess Al Hilal given their unusual circumstances and participation as a guest team in the Rwanda Premier League this season.
