Benfica Boss Plans HUGE R500m Revenue Boost! Will It Work?

Benfica Football Club's boss, Rui Costa, has been re-elected for a second four-year term (2025-2029) and has some ambitious plans for the club. The former Benfica player is aiming high, promising a significant increase in revenue and a substantial reduction in debt.

R500 Million Revenue Target

Costa has pledged to generate a staggering €500 million (approximately R10 billion ZAR) in revenue for Benfica. This is a bold target that will require strategic planning and execution across various revenue streams.

Debt Reduction of R2 Billion

Alongside the revenue boost, Costa also aims to reduce the club's debt by €100 million (around R2 billion ZAR). This financial restructuring is crucial for the long-term stability and success of Benfica.

Champions League Key to Success

Costa emphasized the importance of consistently competing in the Champions League. He believes that participation in this prestigious tournament is essential for achieving both the revenue target and the debt reduction goal. He highlighted that centralised television rights represent a substantial 40% of audiences and revenues in national football.

Centralising TV Rights

Costa also wants to centralise television rights, recognising their importance to national football. He believes this move will further boost the club's financial standing.

According to the club's website, Costa secured his second term with a decisive victory, garnering 1,266,105 votes compared to João Noronha Lopes' 655,566 votes.

Speaking to Jornal Económico, Costa acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly in terms of revenue generation and debt management. He reiterated the need for Benfica to establish itself as a consistent force in European football.

“There is a path we want to complete: to make Benfica a consolidated European presence in football with €500 million in annual revenue, a reduction of €100 million in liabilities and a permanent presence in the finals of the Champions League,” said Rui Costa in the interview.

The coming years will be crucial for Benfica as they strive to achieve these ambitious goals under Rui Costa's leadership.
