South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has declared that securing a Test series victory in India is a top ambition for the Proteas, even surpassing their recent World Test Championship triumph. Speaking ahead of the two-Test series against India, which kicks off on Friday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Bavuma acknowledged the significant challenge that awaits his team.
Having just come from a 1-1 draw in Pakistan, the Proteas are eager to make their mark on Indian soil. Bavuma emphasized the historical difficulty South Africa has faced in winning a Test series in India, a feat they haven't accomplished since 2000 under Hansie Cronje.
"Winning the World Test Championship was a peak achievement," Bavuma stated. "But second to that, winning in India ranks highly. It's something that has eluded us for a long time, and it's definitely a major ambition."
Bavuma, returning from injury after missing the Pakistan tour, recognises the magnitude of the task. "Coming to India is never easy. We understand the challenge. Some of us in the group have experienced moments of hurt here," he admitted.
South Africa's recent record in India is less than stellar, having lost their previous two series 3-0. However, with Bavuma at the helm, the Proteas have a leader boasting a remarkable success rate, winning nine and drawing one of his ten Tests as captain.
Bavuma prepared for the series by playing for South Africa A against India A, securing a five-wicket victory. He found the experience invaluable for regaining match fitness and acclimatizing to subcontinent conditions. "Getting back on the field, improving my fitness, and spending time at the crease was crucial. I made necessary adjustments to adapt to the conditions here," Bavuma explained.
Will Bavuma's leadership and the team's determination be enough to overcome the odds and achieve their ambitious goal? The series promises to be a thrilling contest between two cricketing giants.
