Madlanga Commission Hears Explosive Testimony Regarding EMPD Deputy Chief
PRETORIA - The Madlanga Commission is currently investigating allegations of corruption and mismanagement within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD). Recent proceedings have brought to light a video allegedly showing suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi pledging unwavering loyalty to former City Manager Imogen Mashazi. This revelation has sparked significant debate and raised serious questions about the internal dynamics of the EMPD.
Xolani Nciza, the former head of employee relations, testified before the commission, stating that Mkhwanazi's allegiance to Mashazi explains why the former City Manager shielded him from accountability. According to Nciza, his attempts to hold Mkhwanazi accountable for potential wrongdoings resulted in him being accused of possessing fraudulent qualifications, ultimately leading to his suspension.
Nciza further elaborated on the repercussions he faced for challenging Mkhwanazi. He claims that his powers were unlawfully transferred to Ekurhuleni’s head of legal, Kemi Behari, a move he believes violated HR regulations. He described the EMPD as ‘a place of destruction’ during his testimony, highlighting the alleged hostile environment and the consequences of challenging the established power structures.
Nciza concluded his three-day testimony by stating that he was unjustly prosecuted and even received death threats simply for performing his duties. The commission is now tasked with thoroughly investigating these allegations and determining the extent of the alleged corruption and mismanagement within the EMPD.
The testimony, reported by eNCA's Pule Letshwiti-Jones, has shed light on the complex web of relationships and potential abuses of power within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The Madlanga Commission's findings are eagerly awaited, as they could have significant implications for the future of the EMPD and the accountability of public officials.
