Tragedy struck the N8 highway between Bloemfontein and Botshabelo this morning as a devastating multi-vehicle accident claimed the lives of ten people. The horrific collision, involving a bus and a heavy-duty truck, has left a community in mourning and raised serious questions about road safety.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 6:35 AM, where they found a scene of utter devastation. According to Free State EMS spokesperson Sipho Towa, the bus, carrying approximately 40 passengers and the driver, rear-ended a truck. Sadly, ten passengers – seven men and three women – were declared dead at the scene.
The injured, numbering 30, were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals. Six are reported to be in critical condition, while 24 sustained light to moderate injuries. Towa confirmed that the bus passengers were primarily residents of Botshabelo on their way to work in Bloemfontein.
"Law enforcement officials, including the police accident investigation unit, are currently at the scene, meticulously piecing together what happened," Towa stated. A light motor vehicle was also involved in the accident, but thankfully, no injuries were reported from that vehicle.
The N8 remains heavily affected, with significant traffic delays. Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, follow the directions of traffic officials, and consider alternative routes if possible.
