Lakers fans, rejoice! LeBron James is set to make his highly anticipated 2025-26 NBA season debut after missing the first 14 games due to sciatic nerve irritation. The news comes as a massive boost to the Los Angeles Lakers, who have been eagerly awaiting the return of their star player.
Initially listed as a game-time decision for Tuesday's clash against the Utah Jazz, Lakers coach JJ Redick confirmed James was “trending in the right direction” to play. Confirmation arrived just 40 minutes before tip-off, with James being named in the starting lineup.
James participated fully in Monday's practice, marking his first full session with the team this season. Prior to this, he had been undergoing individual workouts and even participated in full-contact practices with the Lakers’ G-League affiliate last week.
“It’s just been the same revolving doors, just repetition, rehabbing, rehabbing, rehabbing,” James explained after Monday's practice. “Just trying to get back to where I feel like myself again. It’s great to be out here today.”
The Lakers have adopted a cautious approach with the 40-year-old James, mindful of his age and the demands of his 23rd NBA season. The team initially hoped he would be ready for opening night, but priorities shifted towards a long-term strategy focused on maintaining his health throughout the season.
“It’s uncharted territory here,” Redick said earlier in the season, acknowledging the unique situation of managing a player of James's experience and caliber. The emphasis is on ensuring James is healthy and ready to contribute at his best for the duration of the campaign. The Lakers will be hoping that LeBron's return can propel them up the Western Conference standings.
