SA Mourns: Former JMPD Chief David Tembe Passes Away Suddenly!

South Africa is in mourning following the sudden passing of former Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Chief of Police, David Tembe. Tembe, a veteran of over 40 years of service to the residents of Johannesburg, was found unresponsive at his home on Monday.

According to Rhulani Mgwambane, spokesperson for Joburg MMC for Public Safety, emergency services responded swiftly, but Tembe was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.

At the time of his passing, Tembe held the position of strategic advisor to the MMC for Public Safety, Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku. The Department of Public Safety has expressed its collective grief and profound gratitude for Tembe's dedicated service to the city.

"MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, and the entire public safety cluster extend their deepest condolences to Mr Tembe’s family, friends, and former colleagues during this difficult time," Mgwambane stated. Details regarding funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.

David Tembe's career began in 1981 as a paramedic with Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services. He steadily progressed through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as JMPD Chief in 2017. From 2021 to 2023, he served as MMC for Public Safety. His recent role as strategic advisor to Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku allowed him to continue contributing his extensive knowledge and experience.
