Nando's is making headlines, both locally and internationally! From a classic South African ad resurfacing and going viral again, to plans for major UK expansion, the peri-peri chicken chain is staying relevant.
Blue-Light Chaos Returns to SA Feeds
A decade after it first broke the internet, Nando’s classic “chaos-at-the-intersection” advert has returned to the spotlight. The timing is impeccable, resonating with South Africans now more than ever. The legendary “blue-light brigade” skit, originally released in 2014, offers a comic look at VIP convoys halting each other at an intersection. Sirens, ego, chaos, and Nando’s humour – it's a perfect combination.
The ad came with the hashtag #NoBlueLights, encouraging South Africans to have their say. It became one of the platform’s most-watched videos, trending for weeks. Now, nearly a decade later, it's back on everyone’s timelines, sparking laughter and commentary on social media. The resurgence is partly due to current events, reminding viewers of the advert's satirical take on South African society.
Nando's Expands in the UK
Meanwhile, across the pond, Nando's is also celebrating success. The peri-peri chicken business is opening 14 new restaurants in the UK before February 2026, following a year of stronger sales and profits. The South African-owned business reported an 8% increase in revenues to £1.48 billion for the previous financial year, driven by robust consumer demand. Operating profits more than doubled to £146.6 million.
Despite increased cost pressures due to tax and wage increases, Nando’s is optimistic about its future. The expansion programme, which includes several sites that have already launched, follows the opening of 12 UK sites a year earlier. The group is seeking to increase the number of company-owned restaurants and expand its wider international footprint.
Whether it's a nostalgic trip down memory lane with a classic ad or exciting news of international growth, Nando's continues to make waves. Keep an eye out for new restaurants opening near you!
