FC Porto, a giant of Portuguese football, haven't lifted the league title since 2021/22. While they dominated for almost a decade between 2005 and 2013, recent years have seen them claim only three titles in twelve years – a record simply not good enough for a club of Porto's stature. But, is a new era dawning at the Estádio do Dragão under the guidance of Italian manager Francesco Farioli?
Farioli's Redemption Arc at Porto
Farioli arrived in Porto with a strong reputation, having previously managed Nice and Ajax. His time at Ajax, however, ended in heartbreak. After revitalizing the team, they squandered a nine-point lead in the final five games of the season, ultimately losing the title to PSV Eindhoven by a single point. He subsequently left the club.
“It’s difficult. It’s not what I want, but I think it’s necessary for the club,” Farioli said at the time, highlighting the difficult decision. However, Ajax's loss appears to be Porto's gain. After 11 league matches this season, Porto have an impressive record of ten wins and one draw, placing them at the top of the table with a three-point lead.
Tactical Flexibility and Player Empowerment
The 36-year-old Farioli typically employs an attacking 4-3-3 formation, but he has also demonstrated tactical flexibility by switching to a 4-2-3-1 in key victories against Sporting, Braga, and Red Star in the Europa League. He is undoubtedly maximizing the potential of his squad, fostering a strong defensive unit, a dynamic midfield, and a potent attack.
Can Farioli finally bring back the glory days to Porto? Only time will tell, but the initial signs are certainly promising for the Dragons.
