Rory McIlroy Aims to Reset for US Open Challenge at Oakmont
South African golf fans are eagerly anticipating Rory McIlroy's performance at the US Open, held this week at the challenging Oakmont Country Club. After achieving a career Grand Slam at The Masters in April, McIlroy admits to struggling with motivation but hopes to reset and rediscover his form.
McIlroy's Grouping and Previous US Open Performances
McIlroy has been drawn alongside Ryder Cup teammates Shane Lowry and Justin Rose for the opening rounds. This is a compelling group that will be closely watched. He has a strong record at the US Open, finishing runner-up in the last two editions. In 2023, he lost to Wyndham Clark, and last June, Bryson DeChambeau beat him in dramatic fashion at Pinehurst No 2. He is determined to secure his sixth major title and match Sir Nick Faldo's record.
Oakmont's Challenge and McIlroy's Mindset
Speaking at Oakmont, McIlroy acknowledged the difficulty of staying motivated after achieving such a significant milestone as the career Grand Slam. "Chasing a certain goal for the better part of a decade-and-a-half, I think I’m allowed a little bit of time to relax a little. But here at Oakmont, I certainly can’t relax this week," he stated. He recognises that the demanding Oakmont course requires unwavering focus.
Recent Form and the Need for a Reset
McIlroy's recent performances have been below par, finishing 47th at the PGA Championship and missing the cut in Canada. He attributed some of these struggles to a lack of motivation and equipment issues. However, he believes these experiences have helped him reset and refocus his energy for the US Open. "Weeks like Quail Hollow or even weeks like last week, it makes it easier to reset in some ways," he said.
Other Key Players to Watch
Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is grouped with Xander Schauffele and Jose Luis Ballester. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is also a strong contender, aiming for back-to-back major titles.
