Embrose Papier's URC Final Shot: Springbok Redemption?
Embrose Papier, once hailed as South Africa’s next scrumhalf sensation, has a golden opportunity to reignite his Springbok ambitions in the United Rugby Championship (URC) final against Leinster. As Mark Keohane writes for TimesLIVE, the showdown in Dublin presents the perfect stage for Papier to remind Rassie Erasmus of his Test pedigree.
Starting for the Bulls at Croke Park, Papier faces a formidable Leinster side brimming with Irish internationals, further strengthened by the inclusion of RG Snyman and Jordie Barrett. Despite Leinster being the favourites, the Bulls have a winning record against them in recent encounters, securing victory in three of their last five matches. Papier's pivotal role in last week's semi-final triumph over the Sharks underscores his current form.
“Papier broke the game open early on in setting up winger Sebastian de Klerk and was electric for much of the match,” Keohane observes. A stellar performance in Dublin could propel him back into the Springbok selection pool, potentially surpassing other contenders.
Papier's consistent performance throughout the season is undeniable. He's started in 16 of 18 URC matches, showcasing his attacking prowess with 18 defenders beaten, seven clean breaks, and seven offloads. His kicking game is equally impressive, accumulating over 3600 metres with 138 kicks, while maintaining discipline with only four penalties conceded.
Keohane suggests that a standout performance in the final could mark a full-circle moment for the 28-year-old. Initially selected by Erasmus in 2018, Papier has remained loyal to the Bulls, a province he adopted after moving from Darling to Pretoria at a young age. This loyalty, coupled with his current form, positions him as a player to watch in the URC final.
The URC Final is more than just a game for Papier; it's a chance at redemption and a potential pathway back to the Springboks.
