Bloemfontein – A former G4S employee, Motanyane Masukela (also referred to as John Masukela in some reports), initially accused in the Thabo Bester prison escape case, has seen the charges against him withdrawn. This development occurred during a pretrial hearing held at the High Court in Bloemfontein.

Masukela was accused Number Five in the high-profile case concerning Thabo Bester's escape from Mangaung Prison in 2022. He was one of eight individuals accused of conspiring to aid Bester's audacious escape, which involved a staged suicide using a burnt corpse.

The State Prosecutor announced the decision to withdraw charges, stating, "I am going to withdraw the case against one of the accused. I think we can excuse him, and he can go in peace, and that is accused number five, John Masukela." The reasoning behind the withdrawal was not immediately clear.

Thabo Bester and the remaining co-accused were present in court. The group faces a slew of serious charges, including fraud, corruption, aiding an escape, violating a corpse, and defeating the ends of justice.

The pretrial hearing has been postponed to 21 July to allow Advocate Lerato Moela, representing Bester, additional time to prepare. Bester indicated potential financial difficulties in retaining legal representation. Furthermore, Zolile Sekeleni, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana's father, informed the court that he currently lacks legal representation.

Bester and his partner, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, were apprehended in Tanzania following the dramatic escape. The case continues to garner significant public and media attention due to the bizarre circumstances surrounding the escape and the high-profile nature of the individuals involved.
