WSU rocked by violence: Employee murdered, robbery ruled out
The Walter Sisulu University (WSU) community is reeling after a WSU staff member was murdered on Thursday. The Department of Higher Education and WSU officials are currently meeting with the deceased's family to offer support.
Eastern Cape police are investigating the motive behind the brutal attack. The victim's body was discovered inside a stationary vehicle on the university premises in Mthatha. Forensic analysis indicates the staff member sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Police have withheld the identity of the deceased pending further investigation and notification of next of kin.
In a separate but related incident, police have ruled out robbery as the motive in the murder of a WSU Deputy Vice-Chancellor. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, during a visit to Mthatha, confirmed that a dedicated team has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the DVC's death. These recent events follow a troubling pattern of violence at the university. In April, a protesting student was fatally shot, further fueling concerns about safety and security within the WSU community.
Previous Incidents
This series of tragic incidents has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty at WSU. The university and law enforcement agencies are under increasing pressure to find those responsible and restore calm to the campus. The student body and staff are demanding immediate action to ensure their safety and prevent future acts of violence.
Investigation ongoing
Commissioner Masemola reassured the public that the police are taking these cases seriously and are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as they become available.
