Medvedev's Wimbledon Warning: 'Ready to Beat Top Players on Grass!'
Daniil Medvedev is sending a clear message to his rivals ahead of Wimbledon: he's feeling confident and ready to compete. After securing a spot in the Halle Open final against Alexander Bublik, the Russian tennis star has declared his excitement for the upcoming Grand Slam.
Medvedev's impressive run in Halle, host of the Terra Wortmann Open, guarantees his return to the ATP top 10 just in time for Wimbledon. The 29-year-old is chasing his 21st ATP title this week, demonstrating a strong return to form after a disappointing early exit at the French Open and a quarter-final loss at the Libema Open.
Despite liking his level before the French Open, Medvedev faced a surprising first-round defeat to Cam Norrie. He then fell in the Libema Open quarter-finals to Reilly Opelka. However, his recent victory over Alexander Zverev to reach the Halle final has boosted his morale significantly.
“It’s not only about the final, it’s the fact I am playing really great this week,” Medvedev said after his win against Zverev. “I am looking forward to Wimbledon. I have played great there the last two years and I want to play great there this year too.”
Medvedev added, “I like grass. I can beat a lot of top players on grass. In the last two years it’s only Carlos [Alcaraz] that was really, really tough so I am looking forward to it.”
The Alcaraz Factor
Medvedev is rightly wary of Carlos Alcaraz heading into Wimbledon. The Spaniard has won the last two titles at SW19, beating Novak Djokovic on both occasions. Like Medvedev, Alcaraz is also in a final ahead of the grass court Grand Slam, facing Jiri Lehecka at Queen’s. Both the Halle Open and Queen's Club Championships are ATP 500 tournaments.
While Alcaraz beat Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets, Medvedev had a tougher, more drawn-out battle against Zverev, highlighting the challenges of the grass court season.
