Rumours have been circulating regarding the health of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, sparking concern and speculation both online and within Rwanda. The 67-year-old leader has been noticeably absent from the public eye since June 6th, a period documented by the inactivity on his X (formerly Twitter) account. This rare absence has fuelled a wave of rumours, prompting a response from the Rwandan government.

On June 24th, the Rwandan presidency attempted to quell the speculation by releasing photos of Kagame meeting with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. The meeting, described as a "wide-ranging discussion," took place at Urigwiro, the presidential office. These images, which had not previously been available online, were shared on social media in an attempt to dispel concerns.

What Are The Rumours Saying?

Some rumours, originating from a Canada-based opposition figure, suggest Kagame is suffering from a "brain disease" and receiving treatment in Germany. However, a German diplomatic source indicated they had no information to support these claims.

Government Rejects Claims

Government spokesperson Yolande Makolo dismissed the rumours as "false information frequently issued by those who hate him." She urged the public not to be swayed by these claims. A family member of the President echoed this sentiment, stating, "There is nothing to fear, the President is well... He is a human being, and like everyone, he needs time to rest. There is nothing unusual or alarming."

Kagame's Legacy and Controversy

Beyond the immediate health concerns, Kagame's leadership remains a subject of intense debate. While he is credited with Rwanda's post-genocide recovery, his regime has faced criticism for alleged human rights abuses and involvement in conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Accusations include supporting armed groups responsible for widespread violence and resource exploitation in the DRC. This complex narrative highlights the challenges of assessing Kagame's legacy, balancing achievements in Rwanda with serious allegations of human rights violations and regional destabilisation. The international community continues to grapple with these conflicting perspectives.
