Gauteng Braces for Brutal Cold Front!

South Africa is shivering! A severe cold front is sweeping across the country, bringing freezing temperatures, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding to many areas. Cape Town, in particular, is feeling the brunt of the weather, with vulnerable communities already struggling to cope with the impact.

Informal settlements, like the Covid-19 settlement in Mfuleni and Freedom Square in Nyanga, are particularly at risk. Built on wetlands and often lacking proper infrastructure, these areas are highly susceptible to flooding. Blocked drains and sewers exacerbate the situation, leaving residents stranded and struggling to rebuild their homes after devastating floods.

"It's a desperate situation," says a resident of Mfuleni. "We were warned not to build here, but we had nowhere else to go. Now, we're paying the price."

Authorities Urged to Act

Local councillors are calling on authorities to provide better support and preparedness for communities facing the harsh winter conditions. This includes improving drainage systems, providing emergency shelter, and distributing essential supplies like blankets and food.

While the City of Cape Town has not yet reported any casualties or significant damage to major infrastructure (aside from a road washed away in Oranjezicht), the situation remains precarious. Residents are urged to stay informed about weather warnings and take necessary precautions to stay safe and warm.

  • Stay indoors if possible.
  • Dress warmly in layers.
  • Check on elderly neighbours and vulnerable individuals.
  • Report any emergencies to the relevant authorities.

The cold front is expected to persist throughout the week, so South Africans are advised to brace themselves for more chilly weather ahead.
