South Africa is bracing for a significant cold snap this weekend, with the SA Weather Service (Saws) issuing warnings for a sharp drop in temperatures across the central interior. Get ready for rain, showers, and potentially even snow!

Snow is Coming! Where to Expect It

Freezing levels are expected to drop dramatically by Friday, potentially leading to snowfall on the Drakensberg mountains and even sleet in southern parts of Gauteng. Snow Report SA indicates that eight out of nine provinces could see snow between 3 and 7 July. That's almost the whole country!

Areas expecting snowfall include the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng. Even neighbouring Lesotho is in for a snowy treat, making it a perfect time to visit Afriski, one of Southern Africa's premier ski resorts.

Cape Town Chill Explained

Cape Town is already experiencing a chill, and the question on everyone's mind is: Could we see snow on Table Mountain this weekend? For those chasing snow near Cape Town, Matroosberg, just a two-hour drive away, is your best bet. This winter favourite often gets a generous dusting during strong cold fronts.

Weather Warnings and Precautions

Saws weather forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela mentioned a 30% chance of showers and rain on Wednesday over the southwestern part of the country, covering central parts of the Northern Cape into the western half of the Eastern Cape, with a 30% chance of showers along the south coast into the west coast in the Western Cape. There's a 60% chance of showers and rain over the southwest coast of the Western Cape.

Damaging winds are also expected in parts of the central and southern Northern Cape, potentially causing minor damage to settlements and temporary structures, as well as localized problems for transport and travel services. Be prepared for falling trees!
