Hillbrow Water Crisis: Desperate Residents Turn to Manholes!
Hillbrow Residents Desperate as Water Crisis Deepens
Johannesburg residents in Hillbrow are facing a severe water crisis, forcing some to resort to collecting water from leaking manholes. Rand Water has reportedly completed maintenance in the area, but residents claim water supply has not been restored. The lack of water tankers in recent days has exacerbated the situation, leaving many without access to clean water.
The water shortage is raising serious concerns about hygiene, health, and basic dignity. With no clear answers or clean alternatives, residents are struggling to cope.
Gauteng Health Responds
Gauteng's Department of Health has stated that water supply has been restored to most of its facilities following disruptions caused by Rand Water's infrastructure maintenance. Hospitals such as Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, Southrand Hospital, Helen Joseph, and the Alexandra Community Health Centre now have full water service.
However, the Hillbrow Community Health Centre remains affected, as the entire area is still without running water. Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba confirmed that water tankers have been deployed to keep services running smoothly at the Hillbrow facility.
Modiba also noted that facilities like Charlotte Maxeke Hospital have significant water storage capacity. "Charlotte Maxeke has water storage of nine million litres — enough to last two to four days without problems." He added that Helen Joseph Hospital, with the aid of tankers and a borehole, managed to maintain emergency services despite the disruptions.
The situation in Hillbrow highlights the urgent need for reliable water infrastructure and effective communication to prevent further hardship for residents.
