Mpumalanga said a final goodbye to former Deputy President David ‘DD’ Mabuza this Saturday, under a warm winter sun. President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a heartfelt eulogy, remembering Mabuza as a dedicated servant of the people.
A Sombre Reflection on a Life of Service
President Ramaphosa described the day as a moment of “sombre reflection,” honouring Mabuza's significant contribution to South Africa's journey to democracy. He highlighted Mabuza's dedication to the people of Mpumalanga and the nation as a whole. Mabuza, affectionately known as DD or The Cat, passed away last week at the age of 64 after a short illness and was buried at his family home in Barberton.
From Teacher to Political Strategist
Born in Mpumalanga, Mabuza began his career as a teacher before entering the world of political activism and public service. He served as a Member of the Executive Council in various portfolios in Mpumalanga from 1994. He then became the Premier of Mpumalanga in 2009, followed by becoming a Member of Parliament and then Deputy President in 2018.

“In all his responsibilities as deputy president, from land reform to dealing with the HIV/AIDS pandemic, from anti-poverty initiatives to addressing the needs of our military veterans, David Mabuza could always be relied on,” Ramaphosa stated.
Ramaphosa concluded by saying that honouring Mabuza’s legacy requires the ANC to heed calls for internal unity.
