Mamelodi Sundowns legend Denis Onyango has taken on a new role that's got South African football fans talking! The veteran goalkeeper, formerly of the Uganda national team, has joined the coaching staff of the Uganda Cranes ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN). This is particularly interesting as Uganda is in the same group as Bafana Bafana for the tournament.

Onyango's Mentorship Role

Onyango will be working closely with Uganda Cranes goalkeepers coach Billy Kiggundu, offering his expertise and experience to the squad. He'll also serve as a mentor to all the players, sharing his knowledge of the game and the importance of the CHAN tournament.

"For me personally, it was a great honour to be called in by the federation to be part of the technical team that is helping the team get better, and that’s very important," Onyango stated. "As a former national player, I felt it’s important to be here, giving the boys some knowledge and helping coach Kiggundu, but also to tell the boys the importance of the tournament."

Goalkeeper Competition Heats Up

The Uganda Cranes are currently preparing for CHAN, with intense competition for the goalkeeping spots. Joel Mutakubwa, Denis Kiggundu, Hanington Ssebwalunyo, and Chrispus Kusiima are all vying for a place in the final squad. Mutakubwa described the competition as "intense but healthy," highlighting the positive impact Onyango's presence has had on the team.

"He’s been incredibly helpful," Mutakubwa added. "We’re learning a lot from him. Training alongside someone who’s played at the highest level is inspiring—it’s making us better goalkeepers."

What This Means for Bafana Bafana

With Onyango's experience now benefiting Uganda, Bafana Bafana will face a more formidable opponent in the group stages of CHAN. Onyango's insight into the game and his ability to mentor young players could give Uganda a significant advantage. Will Bafana be able to overcome the challenge? The tournament promises to be an exciting one!
