London Southend Airport remains closed following a dramatic plane crash on Sunday afternoon, described by witnesses as a “fireball.” The incident, involving a 12-meter aircraft, occurred shortly before 16:00 BST and prompted a swift response from Essex Police and the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

The airport has confirmed that all flights – both departures and arrivals – scheduled for Monday have been rerouted. Passengers are urged to contact their respective airlines for updated travel information.

Eyewitness accounts paint a harrowing picture of the crash. John Johnson, from Billericay, was watching planes with his family when he witnessed the event. He described seeing the pilots waving to children just before takeoff. "We all waved at the pilots, and they all waved back at us," Johnson recounted. He then detailed how the aircraft, after a seemingly normal takeoff, began to bank heavily to the left before inverting and crashing “head first into the ground.”

"There was a big fireball. Obviously, everybody was in shock in terms of witnessing it," Johnson added.

Dutch company Zeusch Aviation has confirmed that their SUZ1 flight was “involved in an accident” at London Southend Airport. The company, based out of Lelystad Airport in The Netherlands, is actively supporting authorities with the investigation and expressed their thoughts with “everyone who has been affected.” The flight had originated in Athens, Greece, with a stop in Pula, Croatia, before heading to Southend.

As a precaution, police evacuated the nearby Rochford Hundred Golf Club. A bartender at the club described feeling a “big heat wave” before seeing a “massive fireball” in the sky.
