MasterChef SA Shock: John Torode Accused of Racist Language! Can You Believe It?
The culinary world is simmering with controversy! MasterChef presenter John Torode has confirmed that he was the subject of an allegation of using racist language, an allegation that was reportedly upheld in a recent inquiry. This inquiry was initially focused on the behaviour of his co-presenter, Gregg Wallace.
According to reports, the investigation, commissioned by MasterChef's production company Banijay UK, substantiated a significant number of allegations against Wallace. Amidst these findings, two standalone allegations surfaced against other individuals, one of which involved the use of racist language.
Torode took to Instagram to address the swirling speculation. He confirmed that he was indeed the individual accused of using racist language. However, he maintains that he has "no recollection of the incident" and expressed his shock and sadness upon learning about the allegation.
“I am aware of speculation that I am one of the two other individuals against whom an allegation has been upheld,” Torode stated on Instagram. “For the sake of transparency, I confirm that I am the individual who is alleged to have used racial language on one occasion.”
He further elaborated that the alleged incident occurred sometime in 2018 or 2019 in a social setting. Torode claims that the person he was speaking with at the time did not believe the language was intended maliciously and that he apologised immediately afterwards. Despite this, he firmly asserts, “I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened.”
Torode emphasized his unwavering stance against racist language, stating, “I want to be clear that I’ve always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. I’m shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence.”
The unfolding situation has sent ripples through the entertainment industry, raising questions about workplace conduct and the responsibility of public figures. This comes as the BBC is set to release its annual report, which includes disclosures of top talent salaries and faces scrutiny over recent controversial programming.
What Does This Mean for MasterChef SA?
The future of MasterChef South Africa, and John Torode's involvement, remains uncertain. The BBC and Banijay are yet to release an official statement regarding his position on the show.
