Senzo Meyiwa Trial: State Closes Case! What's Next?
The State is expected to conclude its case in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. This comes after a lengthy process that has seen numerous witnesses testify since the trial restarted under Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng in July 2023.
Accused Claims Torture, Trial Delayed
Proceedings faced a delay when accused Fisokuhle Ntuli refused to leave his prison cell, alleging torture and ill-treatment. He further accused officials of fabricating evidence by claiming they found a cellphone in his possession. While Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre confirmed a device was found, they vehemently deny all torture allegations. Ntuli has since been transferred to Leeuwkop Prison following a court order.
State Ready to Conclude Presentation
State advocate George Baloyi has confirmed that the prosecution is nearing the end of their presentation. "It’s just this one document that needs to be handed up, and after handing up this document, this will conclude the presentation on behalf of the state," he stated. This marks a significant milestone in the trial, paving the way for the defense to present their case.
Inspection in Loco Photos to be Presented
The court is also expected to hear testimony regarding photos taken during the inspection in loco conducted earlier this month. This inspection involved a visit to Vosloorus, where accused Muzi Sibiya allegedly suffered an assault. Police photographer Gesani Mankanyi is expected to present additional photos taken at the scene. The photos aim to provide the court with a clear understanding of the location and circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
What's Next?
With the State concluding its case, the focus will shift to the defense. They will present their version of events and call their own witnesses. The court will then determine the next steps in the Meyiwa trial, a case that has gripped the nation for years since the Bafana Bafana captain's tragic death in 2014.
Five Accused in the Dock
Five men stand accused of the 2014 murder of Senzo Meyiwa at the home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo. The trial seeks to finally bring justice for Meyiwa and his family.
