Netflix's The Sandman has concluded its second and final season, leaving fans reeling from the events of the finale. The last five episodes, which dropped on July 24th, adapt the 'Season of Mists,' 'Distant Mirrors,' 'The Kindly Ones,' and 'The Wake' storylines from Neil Gaiman's iconic comic series.

A Familiar Face in a New Role

The finale introduced a new, yet familiar character, accompanied by a surprise appearance from an actor well-known in the fantasy genre. Showrunner Allan Heinberg explained that the role was written specifically with this actor in mind, and their performance has even sparked hopes for a Season 3, despite Season 2 being the planned conclusion.

The season's plot revolves around Dream/Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) facing the consequences of shedding Endless family blood. In a previous episode, Morpheus granted his son, Orpheus (Ruairi O’Connor), a merciful death after centuries of suffering. This act, however, incurred the wrath of the Fates, known as the Kindly Ones, who demanded retribution.

Dream's Sacrifice and a New Beginning

Facing his destiny, Morpheus prepared for his end. The penultimate episode saw Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) reaping Dream/Morpheus, fulfilling the Kindly Ones' punishment. This led to a dramatic transformation: the infant Daniel Hall, conceived in the Dreaming, rapidly aged into a man and assumed Morpheus' memories and responsibilities as Dream of the Endless. Jacob Anderson guest stars as the adult Daniel.

The ending closely mirrors Neil Gaiman's original comic book series, specifically 'The Wake.' The conclusion was the result of collaborative discussions between Gaiman, Heinberg, David S. Goyer, Netflix, and Warner Bros., ensuring a faithful adaptation of Dream's story and the roles of his siblings.

Heinberg has expressed a strong desire to continue the series, stating he would do so “instantly”. Whether Netflix will heed this call remains to be seen, but the finale has certainly left fans wanting more from the world of The Sandman.
