The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) is making headlines, but not for the reasons they'd hoped. Just as Dr. Cynthia Ntombifuthi Khumalo, affectionately known as “Stella,” is celebrated as the first female Director-General of the department, a legal storm is brewing.

SARA Opens Case Against Dr. Khumalo

The South African Roadies Association (SARA), a vital institution focused on skilling youth in live events technical production, has filed a case against Dr. Khumalo. This follows a complaint SARA lodged with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture earlier this year.

SARA alleges that Dr. Khumalo made false and misleading statements to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on October 29, 2024, regarding funds disbursed to SARA by DSAC to establish Backstage Academy SA. Backstage Academy SA is a partnership between SARA and the UK-based Academy of Live Technology.

The Allegations

According to SARA President Freddie Nyathela, the case was registered with the Johannesburg Central Police Station on August 11, 2025. The charges relate to Section 17 (2) (d) (e) of the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislature Act (Act 4 of 2004), which concerns wilfully presenting false and misleading statements to a Parliamentary Portfolio Committee. SARA claims Dr. Khumalo falsely stated “the Backstage Academy’s lack of compliance and accounting for the monies given to it.”

Section 17 (2) (d) (e) of the Act specifies that presenting false and dishonest statements to Parliament is a criminal offense.

A Moment of Triumph Overshadowed?

This legal challenge casts a shadow over what should have been a purely celebratory moment for Dr. Khumalo. Minister Gayton McKenzie had proudly announced her appointment, highlighting her determination, excellence, and commitment to service. Dr. Khumalo's impressive career spans over three decades, including leadership roles in education, tourism, cultural affairs, and governance.

The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected. This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as they become available.
