Public Works Boss Quits! Dodgy Deals Probe Intensifies! You Won't Believe Why!
CAPE TOWN - A top official at the Department of Public Works has resigned amidst a growing investigation into allegedly irregular lease agreements and maintenance contracts. The announcement, made by the department on Friday, signals a commitment to uncovering corruption within this crucial government portfolio.
According to Minister Dean Macpherson, the Deputy Director General of Real Estate Management Services stepped down after being asked to address serious allegations that could have led to suspension. This division within Public Works is responsible for managing a massive property portfolio worth billions of rands, but has been plagued by accusations of mismanagement for years.
One notable example of alleged mismanagement is the billion-rand purchase of the Telkom towers in Pretoria. These towers were intended to become the new police headquarters, but instead, they remain abandoned and unused. This case is just one of many fueling the investigation.
Minister Macpherson stated that both the Deputy Director General and the chief director in charge of managing the real estate portfolio received multiple letters requiring them to respond to the mismanagement allegations while still holding their positions. The DDG responded to all but the last letter before choosing to resign.
Macpherson is now urging the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to request a presidential proclamation to investigate irregular leases with private landlords and payment irregularities related to emergency maintenance of facilities. This move underscores the seriousness of the situation and the determination to root out corruption.
"The Director-General, Mr. Sifiso Mdakane, and I are committed to upholding good governance, protecting public resources, and ensuring our property portfolio is used for the benefit of all South Africans," said Macpherson. "This is how we will turn South Africa into a construction site, grow the economy, and create jobs.”
