Accra, Ghana – Former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, and former CEO, Solomon Asamoah, are seeking a variation in their bail conditions concerning their reporting obligations to case investigators. They are currently facing trial at the Criminal Division of the High Court.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and Mr. Asamoah are accused of causing financial loss of $2 million to the state in connection with a proposed sky train project for Accra. They have pleaded not guilty to six counts, including conspiracy, willfully causing financial loss to the state, and intentional dissipation of public funds. Their initial bail was set at a combined GH¢25 million with two justified sureties.

Under the current bail terms, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is required to report to the police weekly, while Mr. Asamoah must report to the investigator every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. During a court hearing yesterday, their legal representatives orally requested the court to modify these terms.

Justice Comfort Tasiame, presiding over the case, instructed the lawyers to formally file an application with supporting reasons, allowing the Attorney-General to respond. The court has adjourned the case to June 24, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC). During the CMC, Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, is expected to withdraw certain witness statements related to the matter.

Prosecution's Case

The Attorney-General accuses Mr. Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi of illegally transferring $2 million from GIIF's account to Africa Investor Holdings L. This transfer is central to the prosecution's case against them regarding the allegedly mismanaged sky train project funds.

Next Steps

The upcoming Case Management Conference is crucial for determining the future course of the trial. The defense's application for bail variation and the Attorney-General's response will be key points of contention. The withdrawal of witness statements could also significantly impact the evidence presented.

  • Defense seeks variation in reporting requirements.
  • Case adjourned to June 24, 2025, for CMC.
  • $2 million transfer to Africa Investor Holdings L under scrutiny.
