An 83-year-old man from Joliet, Arthur Vidmar, who faced DUI charges after a serious car crash, will not be kept in Will County Jail. This comes after his lawyer, Steven Haney, successfully argued for his release.
The DUI Incident
Vidmar was arrested in November and October on DUI charges. The November 15th crash on Larkin Avenue resulted in a 67-year-old woman suffering serious injuries. Prosecutors said Vidmar had been drinking and was over the legal limit at the time of the incident. His pickup truck reportedly left the KFC drive-thru, hit the building, drove through landscaping, and collided with the woman's car.
The Legal Battle
The Will County State's Attorney's Office wanted to keep Vidmar in jail under the SAFE-T-Act, arguing he was a danger to the community. However, Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak ruled in Vidmar's favor, ordering his release. Haney assured the court that Vidmar would never drive again, ensuring safeguards are in place to prevent future incidents.
