Dr. Don Phipps has officially been sworn in as the new Superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS). This marks a significant moment for the district, its educators, families, and students.
Phipps succeeds Interim Superintendent Catty Moore, whose six-month contract concluded recently. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as superintendent for Caldwell County Schools and Beaufort County Schools for eight years.
A Leader with a Proven Track Record
WS/FCS highlights Phipps as a steady and collaborative leader known for his 'excellent financial management skills'. His appointment comes at a crucial time for the district, which has been navigating a financial crisis.
Facing Financial Challenges
Earlier this year, WS/FCS faced a nearly $46 million shortfall for the 2024-2025 school year. District leaders have since implemented staff reductions and budget cuts, while also collaborating with state and local lawmakers to find solutions. Community groups have also stepped up, raising millions in donations.
Phipps signed a 15-month contract and will be instrumental in guiding the school district through these financial challenges. He stated, “I feel like I have a set of skills that the school system needs and I think we're, again, a good fit at the right time.”
Phipps' Vision for WS/FCS
Phipps views superintendents as having a 'firefighter mentality,' ready to address issues and work collaboratively. He emphasizes being an integral part of a team working together to achieve success.
