Canham's Killer Performance: Wallabies Recall Incoming?

Wallabies lock Josh Canham is aiming to turn a stellar Australia A showing into a Test recall just in time for Saturday's showdown against Japan. His recent performance has certainly put him in the spotlight.

Dominating Japan XV: A Wallabies Statement

Canham was among the players from the end-of-year squad who travelled early and made a significant impact. He played a key role in Australia A's dominant 71-7 victory over Japan XV in Osaka, showcasing his skills and readiness for higher competition.

The second-rower displayed excellent synergy with Darcy Swain, effectively dismantling the host's lineout. Together, they managed to steal five throws without conceding a single one. Canham's athleticism was also on display as he set up a try for Swain, racing down the field to deliver the final pass.

Fitness and Leadership: Key Factors for Selection

"I think we prepped well and that got the results at lineout time and lineout defence, but I think the scoreboard reflected the game. We had quite a good effort and test in certain areas," Canham told reporters. He emphasised the importance of game fitness, which cannot be replicated in training, and his desire to prove himself in that aspect and lead the team.

Motivation from Past Experiences

Canham, who earned a single cap off the bench against Argentina in 2024, and led Bond Uni to a Hospital Cup title in August, is determined to add to his international experience. That taste of action overseas has fueled his motivation to reclaim his spot in the Wallabies squad.

"You see how cool Test rugby [is] and how awesome it would be to play instead of being so close and then not quite getting picked, it's very motivating to just work hard and get better and make sure that eventually you will be picked," he reflected. He also mentioned the motivation he gained from returning to his club.

Looking Ahead: Canham's Wallabies Ambitions

With his recent performance and renewed focus, Josh Canham is making a strong case for a Wallabies recall. The clash against Japan could be the perfect opportunity for him to showcase his abilities on the international stage once again.
