Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is setting his sights firmly on the 2027 World Cup, but not without a clear strategy for the upcoming 2025 Test season. With a demanding schedule of 15 Tests plus a non-cap match against the Barbarians in Cape Town on June 28th, Erasmus is emphasizing the crucial balance between building team depth and maintaining a winning streak.

“Getting the balance between building and continuing to win [in 2025] is the most important thing because the World Cup draw is at the end of the year,” Erasmus stated. He acknowledges the need to build the team, but cautions against losing momentum, as this could hinder their progress. The initial 53-man squad will be trimmed down to 40-42 players after the first four fixtures.

Erasmus underlines the importance of meticulous planning for each Test. “Our planning has to be right for every Test; if you lose a little momentum, you could take one step back before you can take two steps forward.” While confident in their current strategy, he remains aware that unforeseen challenges may require a fresh approach.

Barbarians & July Tests: No Room for Complacency

Erasmus intends to field a relatively experienced team against the Barbarians while providing opportunities for new players. He also emphasizes the importance of not underestimating Italy and Georgia in the July Tests.

“Everyone expects us to just beat Italy. They were really competitive in the first two rounds of this year’s Six Nations… They will be physical and ready for us.” Erasmus highlights Italy’s courage in defence and stresses the need for the Springboks to play with confidence-inspiring authority.

Georgia: A Forward Challenge

Regarding Georgia, Erasmus warns against underestimating their forward pack. “If you underestimate them up front, the whole Test can be difficult.” This comment underscores the importance of a strong, physical performance to secure victory.

With a packed schedule and the World Cup in mind, Erasmus is clearly focused on building a resilient and adaptable Springbok squad ready to face any challenge.
