Kyle Verreynne, affectionately nicknamed 'Scholesy' by his Proteas teammates, is geared up for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord's. The wicketkeeper-batsman, whose nickname alludes to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes' ginger hair and ability to rise to the occasion, has become a key figure in the South African squad.

Verreynne acknowledges the significance of the match. "It’s Lord’s. It’s an ICC final against Australia, who have been the benchmark in Test cricket for so long. It is everything you dream of as a cricketer," he said, emphasizing the magnitude of the opportunity.

He has already surpassed 1,000 Test runs, showcasing his batting prowess. While focusing on contributing valuable runs in crucial situations, Verreynne highlights the importance of adaptability. "My job at six or seven is not always about scoring big runs. Sometimes it’s a quick 40 to set a target, or a fighting 30, batting with the bowlers," he explained. "It is always very nice to contribute to the team and make an impact on the game."

Verreynne credits the positive environment fostered by coach Shukri Conrad and captain Temba Bavuma for his improved performance and the team's overall momentum. "What Shuks and Temba have created is incredible. They encourage each of us to be ourselves, and I think it has brought out the very best of us," Verreynne stated. This sentiment echoes Conrad's philosophy: "Shukri often says he doesn’t care how it looks, as long as it gets the job done. And, if you look at this team, there are a lot of guys whose main goal is to just get the job done."

This WTC final marks a historic moment for South Africa, being their first appearance in the tournament's final. Verreynne's resilience and 'never give up' attitude is something the Proteas will be relying on as they go up against Australia, who will undoubtedly be tough opponents. He will also be looking to add Australia to the list of countries where he has already scored a Test Century.
